The first major decision is choosing a residential cable car is deciding on the number of rails to support the cab. The choice of mono or dual rail is an important design criterion and has an effect on the type of cab that can be used, the ride smoothness and the cost of the installation.
These are generally best suited to private homes as they offer the most cost effective design. Because the rail is typically only 200 mm wide, these installations can be very discretely installed into private homes. The boxed beam mono rails used in all Access Automation Limited cable cars and inclined lifts are very rigid and torsionly stiff. This means that the car ride stability is very good for a monorail, even with our 1.2 meter wide four person car.
We can offer both self levelling and turning cable cars with the mono rail system to give maximum flexibility in the layout of the landing decks and topography over which the cable car can be installed. There is no restriction on the maximum length of rail. In New Zealand, there is no restriction on the maximum rail gradient on which we can install a mono rail cable car.

The use of two rails gives the widest and most stable rail structure. This makes them ideal for larger gondola cars, higher speed cars or for resorts or commercial installations where maximum ride stability is important. The dual rail structure can be manufactured at various widths and can also be designed to support services to the building, concealed below the rails. We can offer both the self levelling and turning cable cars with the dual rail design.
As the rails are wider there is more visual impact but this is minimized with the clean lines of the Access Automation rail system. Naturally, with the extra rail structure the cost of the dual rail system is higher than a mono rail system. Typically, a dual rail cable car will be about 60% to 75 % more than a mono rail cable car.
